Despite the name, the Chinese Crested most likely originated in Africa as the African Hairless Terrier. However, the name may have changed after the dogs were used to hunt rats on Chinese ships. This breed can be found in two variations, the Hairless and the Powderpuff, both of which can be born in the same litter. If a Hairless Chinese Crested does have almost a full coat, it will be a thin, single coat as opposed to the soft, double coat of the Powderpuff.
