It is most likely a scene from the Aesop's Fable "The Fox and the Grapes."
This is a beautiful and now rare large Antique Chinese 1880-1899 Qing Dynasty Bronze Repousse Enamel Footed Humidor Box featuring highly raised repousse work in high relief on the lid and to all the sides and edges of the box which is lined with the original wooden interior!!
Made for export during the Qing Dynasty. Hallmarked China on the base of this bronze box (very hard to read through the patina but it is there).
In good vintage condition for it's great age with some areas of enamel loss as to be expected. Has undisturbed patina.
The wood lining is in tact and the lid opens and closes tightly.
The enamel colors are still very bright which contrast beautifully against the bronze-gold color of the piece.
These exquisite boxes showcase the high standard of Chinese workmanship that is no longer being executed in these pieces. A wonderful addition to your box collection because once they are gone they are gone forever. This box is absolutely beautiful.
